5 THINGS YOU MUST KNOW ABOUT ROAD SAFETY

SEGMENTS BELOW

  1. Understanding Total Crash Costs

  2. Speeding - where most of the risk is

  3. Distracted Driving

  4. Cognition, Dehydration and Fatigue

  5. Eco-Driving - impact on crash-risk and fuel consumption

1.UNDERSTANDING TOTAL CRASH COSTS

“For Every $1 In Known, Quantifiable, Insurance Costs, There Is Between $8 To $53 In Hidden, Unknown, Non-Insurance Costs.”

Research by the International Loss Control Institute

WHAT ARE THESE HIDDEN OR UNINSURED COSTS?

  • Late deliveries or failure to deliver service expectations

  • Lost productivity or efficiency of service provision

  • Brand or reputation damage

  • Investigations & administration costs

  • Training & costs for improvement

  • Penalties and fines

  • Low morale

  • Absenteeism

  • High staff turnover

  • Hiring costs

2.SPEEDING - WHERE MOST OF THE RISK IS

MOTOR VEHICLE FATALITIES BY SPEED ZONE, AUSTRALIA 2018

KEY TAKE-OUT

Most fatalities occur in speed zones BELOW 100km/h

ALSO

Most serious trauma events occur at 60km/h and below

Serious Trauma to Fatalities

LESSONS INTO PRACTICE

Mercurien’s safety technology addresses driver behaviour risk across ALL posted speed zones.

3.DISTRACTED DRIVING

PREVENTING IT AT A PERSONAL LEVEL
Phone calls whilst driving, even if using hands-free, divert your attention from the road and increase your crash risk.

Tips for iPhone Users
Use Driving Focus on your iPhone to concentrate on the road. With iOS 15 or higher, Driving Focus can help you stay focused on the road. When you have it turned on, text messages and other notifications will be silenced or limited.

If you haven't previously used Do Not Disturb while Driving on iOS 14 or earlier, you'll need to set up Driving Focus in order to turn it on. Here's how:

  1. Go to Settings and tap Focus

  2. Tap the Add button, then tap Driving

  3. Tap Next, then follow the onscreen instructions to set up your options, such as Allowed Notifications

  4. Tap Done

AT AN ORGANISATIONAL LEVEL
Mercurien are actively involved with the National Road Safety Partner Program (NRSPP).

The NRSPP have recently developed a campaign that can be executed across an entire organisation so all workers are safe on the road.

These resources are freely available.

4.COGNITION, DEHYDRATION & FATIGUE

HOW THEY CAN IMPACT ON DRIVER BEHAVIOUR

As part of our commitment to the National Road Safety Partner Program (NRSPP), Mercurien produced these short evidence-based videos to assist organisations in understanding the challenges in managing cognition, fatigue, dehydration & driver behaviour.

PART 2 - SIMPLE SAFETY STRATEGIES

5.ECO-DRIVING; IMPACT ON CRASH-RISK & FUEL CONSUMPTION

SIGNIFICANT IMPACT
When compared to ‘harsh’ drivers, ‘eco-drivers’ use 20% less fuel and have a 25% lower crash rate:

Mercurien’s data and insights contributed to this NRSPP Thought Leadership Paper. Note that the contribution referred to was made under the FleetRisk brand, which has now been consolidated with the Mercurien Group.

WHAT IS ‘ECO-DRIVING'?
Eco-driving is a style that includes maintaining a steady speed, less speeding, less overtaking and less aggression.

LESSONS INTO PRACTICE
Your workers' behaviour behind the wheel is THE major contributor to fuel usage. Our approach to safety integrates a continuous improvement loop that nudges drivers to safer ‘eco-driving’ practices.

MICRO-LEARNING VIDEO COACHING

A continuous feedback loop with integrated WHS reports providing information across improvements in targeted behaviours, overall driving behaviour, and engagement.

RISK ANALYSED

Gathering data doesn’t reduce crash rates until it’s converted into feedback that people can easily access and understand. So we analyse the data collected and identify, for each individual, their key risk behaviour that’s most in need of focus.

DIGITAL DELIVERY

Targeted videos are delivered periodically via email or SMS, but never whilst driving. It’s a low-cost, convenient and geography is no barrier; crash-prevention coaching can be delivered at scale.

800+ VIDEOS

There are over 800 videos in our library. Providing each individual with insights into what they most need to focus on and why it’s important. Nudging them towards safer eco-driving habits that reduce fuel consumption and crash-risk.

56 SECONDS

Bite-sized information that can be easily absorbed, the average length of the videos is approximately 56 seconds. Feedback is delivered in respectful ‘psychologically-safe’ language.

Targeted Micro-Learning Video Coaching is available with FaaS, FMDS and Device-Based Insurance Policies. App-Based Insurance Policies come with Topic-Specific Video Coaching.

REDUCING RISK & INSURANCE CLAIMS

Our approach has been refined by a deeper understanding of driver-behaviour risk and how to deliver actionable feedback that generates sustainable outcomes.
